One Verse a Day: Journey Through the Qur’an | #1

As-salamu alaykum everyone,

My name is Mirjana, and I currently live in Germany, but I am originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Islam has always been close to my heart in some way, but it wasn’t until about ten years ago that I started to deeply explore my faith. I went through a period where I was praying regularly and truly connecting with Islam, but then, at some point, I drifted away again.

However, in the past few years, especially in this last year, Alhamdulillah, my faith has become stronger than ever. One of the biggest influences on my journey has been Yusha Evans, whose videos I found online. His way of explaining Islam helped me focus on the essence of the faith, freeing myself from unnecessary burdens that sometimes come from cultural interpretations rather than from the true message of Islam.

I am truly grateful for this journey, and I believe that every step, even the ups and downs, was part of Allah’s plan to bring me closer to Him.

And this year, insha’Allah, I will be welcoming Ramadan as someone who prays every single salah on time. This is something I deeply cherish, as I feel a growing sense of peace and closeness to Allah.

I know that everyone's journey is different, and we all have our own struggles and victories. For me, this Ramadan is a reminder that no matter where we were before, Allah’s mercy is always there, welcoming us back. I pray that this month brings each of us closer to Him in our own beautiful ways. ❤️

I am so excited for all the Ramadan challenges that will be shared here! I can’t wait to see what everyone has prepared, but this morning, after praying Fajr, I felt inspired to start a challenge of my own.

Every day, starting from today, I want to reflect on one verse of the Qur’an. Not just read it, but truly think about it, understand it, and feel its depth. I decided to start from the very first revealed verses, following the order in which they were sent down, with exception of  Surah Al-Fatiha that I would like to start with. I will share the verse, write about what I find special about it, how I personally understand it, and what reflections I have.

I would love for others to join in! If I miss something, or if you have additional insights, please feel free to comment and share your thoughts. This way, we can all learn together, and insha’Allah, grow closer to the Qur’an as a community.

I know there are over 6,000 verses in the Qur’an, and I don’t know how far I will get in this life, but that’s not the point. The point is to start. And if Allah wills, I would love to continue this challenge even after Ramadan, one verse at a time, for as long as I can.

So today, I want to begin this journey with the very first revealed words of the Qur’an:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim

(In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.)

This phrase is something we say so often, before we begin anything, yet sometimes we don’t stop to truly reflect on its meaning.

One thing I found interesting is that "Bismillah" can be understood as "With the name of Allah" rather than "In the name of Allah." The reason for this is that we do not act on behalf of Allah, nor do we do things in His name as if we are replacing Him. Instead, we begin everything with His name, His blessings, and His support.

Insha’Allah, in the next days, I will reflect more on the beautiful names of Allah, Ar-Rahman and Ar-Rahim, when we reach Surah Al-Fatiha. There is so much depth in these names, and I can’t wait to explore them together!

Disclaimer: This is not a formal tafsir, nor do I claim to have scholarly knowledge. I am simply reflecting on the Qur’an using resources available to me, with the intention of understanding and connecting with it on a deeper level. If I make any mistakes, may Allah guide me, and I welcome corrections from those with more knowledge. My only goal is to grow closer to the Qur’an and to learn together with this beautiful community, insha’Allah.

Great to know about your experience so far. May almighty Allah make it easy for you and all of us.

Bismillah can mean both “in the name” and “with the name” depending on the circumstances of each case. So when we do any action/duty the context of “in” applies but when we seek His (Allah’s) help/ guidance then the context of “with” applies.

In sha Allah this makes sense.
